7. Performance tests
7.1 The main objective of these series of tests is to determine, by the application of simulated loads and related stresses, whether a our products, specifically load-bearing members and joints hereof, can reasonably withstand normal use.
(a) The manner of testing herein described represents the simplest procedure that has been found workable in a majority of furniture, especially chairs. There will, however, be cases in which the design precludes the use of this particular procedure. In such cases, the tests to which the furniture are to be submitted shall be derived from the same principle as the standard test, using other means of applying either the same load or loads that have a similar effect.
7.2 Inspection before testing
(a) Immediately before testing, each sample shall be inspected and any apparent defects noted, so that they shall not later be recorded as having been caused by the tests. A report on such defects shall accompany the report on the performance tests and these shall be taken into account in assessing whether the article has complied with the requirements of this standard.
7.3 Test procedure
(a) Each sample shall be subjected to the series of tests specified in Section 7.4, the tests being carried out in that sequence.
(b) If during or after any of the tests described in 7.4 relative movement is apparent between the members of any joint and it is established that the joint is broken in such a way as to impair its serviceability, the furniture shall be deemed to have failed to pass the performance tests.
(c) If failure of a joint is recorded, or if for any other reason the furniture selected for testing is deemed to have failed to pass the Performance Tests of this standard, the testing of that article shall be discontinued and no further sections of the test procedure shall be applied to it.
(d) If any of the tests specified in 7.4 would cause local damage or is inappropriate for any other reason, it shall be replaced by a test or tests based on the same principle (see 7.1)
7.4 Tests.
(a) Test Samples. Samples selected at random in accordance with 6.1 shall be tested as specified herein.
(b) Level Test (all items) . Casters or glides shall be removed. Items shall be placed on a flat level surface plate. All legs shall simultaneously rest on the surface plate. Any evidence of rocking when light force is applied at any corner shall be cause for rejection.
(c) Sand Bag Test (chairs and sofa frames). These items shall withstand six impacts of a 29.5 kg (65 pounds) sand bag, 30.48 cm (12 inches) in diameter at dropped end, a distance of 106.68 cm (3.5 feet) in each of the following locations: (a) directly over a leg, (b) midway between the legs on the side frame members and on front frame rail at midpoint.
(d) Impact Test . Chairs shall withstand 12 drops from a height of 91.44 cm (3 feet) above a concrete floor. The chair shall be tilted to an angle of 12 degrees diagonally across the plane of the feet to insure that one leg receives the initial impact.
(e) Diagonal Load Test . Chair shall be laid back in such a way that the front edge of the seat is directly above the feet or the rear legs. Apply a vertical load of 68.04 kg (150 pounds) to the front edge of the seat. The force shall be applied and completely removed steadily during periods of not less than 5 seconds for 20 times.
(f) Static Load Test (chair frame with deck) . A static load of a 68.04 kg (150 pounds) sand bag shall be applied vertically over a 30.48 cm (12 inches) diameter area in the center of the deck and allowed to remain for 15 minutes. Upon removal of the load, there shall be no evidence of breakage or loosening or separation of frame joints;
(g) Static Load Test (tables). The height of the table shall be measured accurately. A static load of 45.36 kg (100 pounds) shall be applied vertically over a 30.48 cm (12 inches) diameter area in the centre of the table top and allowed to remain for 30 minutes. Upon removal of the load, the height shall not have decreased by more than 0.31 cm (1/8 inch) and there shall be no evidence of breakage or separation of joints.
7.5 Criteria for success
(a) No part of the furniture or its components or fittings shall develop any fracture, or any apparent loosening of a joint intended to be rigid, or any deformations which would adversely affect any of its functions.
(b) Each sample tested shall fulfill the conditions of the test described in 7.3(b).
(c) Each sample tested shall sustain each of the forces described in 7.4.
8. Marking
8.1 Each furniture complying with this standard shall be marked with the Sun Valley RattanCertification Mark.

RATTAN SPECIES
Rattan is a climbing vine with numerous thorns or spines, hairs, and bristles scattered all over the plant. Some rattans have leaves with extended whip-like structure, the cirrus, which is an extension of the midrib. Others have the flagellum, which is also whip-like, that arises from the axil of the leaf sheath. The cirri and flagella enable the palm to climb adjacent trees for support.
Rattans are observed to be growing throughout the country from Batanes to Tawi-Tawi islands. They are found from near sea level and medium elevations in the old and second growth forest. Generally, most rattan species have a wide altitudinal range although there are some species, which tend to have specific ranges. The most widely distributed of the Philippine rattan species is ditaan (Daemonorops mollis). This is followed by Tandulang parang (Calamus usitatis). Other species of Rattan include Palasan, Kalapi, Tumalin and Limuran.
Species of the genus Korthalsia are found in Quezon, Leyte, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.

We ensure that all our Rattan used to manufacture furniture is from a guaranteed sustainable plantation.

RATTAN FACTS
Rattan (from the Malay rotan), is the name for the roughly six hundred species of palms in the tribeCalameae, native to tropical regions of Africa, Asia and Australasia. Most rattans are distinct from other palms in having slender stems 2-5 cm diameter with long internodes between the leaves; their consequent growth habit also differs, not being trees but vine-like, scrambling through and over other vegetation. They are also superficially similar to bamboo, but distinct in that the stems are solid, rather than hollow, and also in their need for some sort of support; while bamboo can grow on its own, rattan cannot. Some general (e.g. Metroxylon, Pigafetta, Raphia) are however more like typical palms, with stouter, erect trunks. Many rattans are also spiny, the spines acting as hooks to aid climbing over other plants, and also to deter herbivores.
USES FOR RATTAN
Rattans are extensively used for making furniture and baskets. This makes it a potential tool in forest maintenance, since it provides a profitable crop that depends on rather than replaces trees. Whether it can be as profitable or useful as the alternatives, however, remains to be seen.
Cut into sections, rattan can be used like wood to make furniture. Rattan accepts paints and stains like wood, and it is available in many colors; and it can be worked into many styles. Due to its durability, sections of rattan can be used as staves or canes for martial arts or caning people, a form of punishment still popular in many countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. Moreover, the inner core can be separated and worked into wicker.
The fruit of some rattans exudes a red resin called dragon's blood. This resin was thought to have medicinal properties in antiquity and was also used as a dye for violins, among other things. The resin normally results in a wood with a light peach hue.

ABOUT RATTAN
Rattan is mostly found in the deep tropical forests of Southeast Asian countries, which, among them, are the Philippines where excellent quality of Rattan grows in abundance. Rattan plants are classified in the division Magnaliophyta, class Liliopsida, order Arecales, family Palmae. It grows as a long slender spiny vine-like pole with exterior characteristic almost similar to bamboo, but it has a solid inner core and skin that is strong and durable. Rattan’s maturity is reached after six to fifteen years in which the stems can change from green to yellow color with an increase in toughness and strength that is guaranteed to last generations of use. These characteristic of Rattan makes this wild jungle vine-like plant a unique and outstanding material for indoor and outdoor furnishings.
Very few people know that Rattan bares fruit. Rattan fruit comes in bunches and is soft, juicy and very sour; it satisfies anyone’s desire for truly tropical sour fruit. With yellow to light brown color, the skin of the rattan fruit is hard, dry and looks woven. Unlike other fruit, rattan has three sections in each fruit, each has a hard seed. Both fruit meat and seeds are dark red to brown in color.
Growing in dense rain forest's, rattan climbs on tree limbs until it reaches the top to get sunshine. The main stem grows from their parents’ plant to tree height, falling to the jungle floor under their own weight and then climbing to tree top height again. While it grows to reach above the forest canopy, Rattan climbs like a vine maintaining an almost uniform diameter throughout its length. The skin of rattan pole is hard and durable, while the inner core is tough, fibrous and flexible. With steam or flame, it can be bended into various forms without breaking it, yet retaining the shape.
Rattan grows year-round but harvesting is done manually. It grows as high as 200 to 600 feet, with diameters varying from half inch to two inches more or less. There is no standard size for the demand of rattan pole in furniture making. Every pole that comes out of the forest has its own use. Due to the difficulty in bringing the Rattan out of the forest, they are cut into 10 to 15 feet long poles, before they are bundle-tied together and manually carried out of the jungle. The skin from the larger poles are peeled out, which is mostly used for weaving, binding and wrapping. The inner part is used for framing and other larger weave designs. We use our thinner poles for delicate and quaint designs for our furniture.
HOW TO MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF YOUR RATTAN
Maintenance of your rattan furniture is very easy. Here are few tips to keep your rattan furniture in its best condition.
TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR FURNITURE OUTDOORS
Furniture Foam Cushion Materials
The purpose of this of this section is to educate you about foam cushion materials that are used in furniture. If your foam cushion material is more that 10 years old, or if it is beginning to have a “rounded” front edge, or if the seat foam doesn’t offer you the support you need to feel comfortable, then you are probably ready for new foam cushions.
WHAT MAKES GOOD FOAM?
There are three performance test are of primary concern in evaluating the suitability of foam. The first concern is if the foam is rated a HIGH RESILIENT (HR). The next concern is DENSITY rating of the foam. And finally, the INDENTATION LOAD DEFLECTION (ILD) rating is also an important factor in selecting a foam material for your new cushions.
HIGH RESILIENT (HR) foam is what you might think it is. It is a foam material that is produced to offer a longer useful life that a non-HR foam. HR foam is often also rated a fire resistant (FR). All of our foam is rated both HR and FR.
The DENSITY rating of “High Density” is expressed as a two digit number which may range from 1.8 – 3.1. The higher the density rating… the higher the quality of the foam and the longer you can expect it to maintain its shape. We only use foam material of 2.2 – 2.4 Density for our back cushion materials to give you a soft back rest and a DENSITY of 2.8 to 3.0 for all of our seat foam cushions.
The next rating of concern is the INDENTATION LOAD DEFECTION (ILD) rating. This is a measure of how much pressure it takes to compress he foam. 25% of its thickness. For instance, if your seat cushion is 4” thick and has an ILD rating of 33, it would take 33 pounds of pressure to condense the foam to a thickness of 3”. The ILD rating of foam material will tell you how FIRM the foam is. As we offer a 5 year warranty on our furniture sets, we only include the best foam materials that will last you for a very long time and ensure your total satisfaction.
We usually use a back cushion foam which is 2.4 density with an ILD rating of 1.8. This foam material produces a medium-firm back cushion that is the ideal mate to our HR3.1/33 ILD seating foam material. Together, this combination of foam materials produces the ultimate in seating comfort using foam material that are of excelled quality. Where a softer back cushion is desired our 2.4 density / 12 ;b. ILD foam material may be substituted.

- To prevent dust buildup, simply wipe it with a dry cloth, feather duster or the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.
- Only use a slightly damp cloth to remove spillages.
- Wipe the piece down occasionally with damp cloth and mild household cleaner.
- Un-lacquered pieces, those left in the natural state, can be sprayed with a clear varnish to seal the surface.
- If your furniture is really dirty you may find it beneficiary to hose it down, but make sure you dry your furniture properly! Check with our sales staff, if this method is suitable for your furniture.
- The cushions of your rattan furniture may be susceptible to fading. Turning the cushions regularly and protecting it from too much direct sun exposure will help slow down fading of the material.
- In time, the weave of the seating and back support of your chairs may be damaged. It can easily be repaired if you take it to a rattan repair shop. It is much cheaper to repair it than to buy a new piece.
- To touch up paint on white wicker, always make sure that the area to be painted is dry and dust free.
TIPS TO ENJOY YOUR FURNITURE OUTDOORS
- Check with our office whether your rattan furniture is suitable for use in the garden as well. This way you will get double usage out of it.
- Cover your furniture when not in use, whether it's outside in the garden or in un-shaded porches.
- Choose a pattern for your cushions you know you can live with for a good number of years.
- Make sure that your cushions are fire retardant. Just check with our office.
- A good color harmony makes you feel relaxed. Use colors, prints and designs for your cushions that are soothing to look at.
- Check with our office whether you can remove the cushion covers for (dry) cleaning.
- Choose smaller pieces if you have limited space for your furniture.
